Does homeowners insurance cover hail damage to a roof?

Often it does, if the policy includes hail or windstorm coverage and the damage is sudden. Texas Department of Insurance says most inland homeowners policies pay for wind and hail much like they pay for fire, though a separate wind deductible can apply. Coastal Texas often needs a separate windstorm policy. Your insurer still decides the claim.

Hail on the shingles and water in the attic are two different insurance questions. People mix them up because both can follow the same storm.

What an inland policy often does

The Texas Department of Insurance windstorm page says that if you live anywhere in Texas except along the coast, you probably have wind and hail coverage in the homeowners policy. The company pays for that damage much like it pays for fire, lightning, or theft, though a different deductible can apply.

Nebraska's hail-damage note says some companies charge a higher deductible for wind and hail than for other perils, and that a claim below the deductible may still be counted when the company reviews a renewal.

Your declarations page is the document that counts. A standard HO-3 policy is one common form. This site cannot read yours for you.

What a coastal Texas house may still need

The same Texas page says a coastal homeowners policy might not cover wind and hail. Many people buy a separate policy from the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association. You cannot get a TWIA policy if there is already a hurricane in the Gulf.

A TWIA claim has one year from the storm. How long do I have to file a hail claim? keeps that clock next to the Kansas and inland Texas clocks.

What that means in Amarillo and elsewhere

Amarillo sits inland on the Panhandle, so a standard homeowners policy is the usual starting point. Coverage is still the insurer's decision. Hail or wind hit the roof. Do this before anyone tears shingles. is the order while you wait for the adjuster.
